LO3 Legal and Ethical

LO3 Legal and Ethical

Broadcasting act 1994

This act effect the television or radio companies rather than the regulator became the broadcasters as had been the case in the early era of the independent television authority when it has fewer regulatory powers than it would later assume.

In television:

The act allowed for the creation of a fifth analogue channel in the UK. Which turned out to be channel 5 and the growth of multichannel satellite television. It also stipulated that the BBC.

In radio:

This allowed for the launch of three independent national radio stations tow of them on medium wave using frequencies formerly used by the BBC and the other on FM using frequencies formerly used by the emergency services.

While planning to make our documentary we have to make sure that all of our content and actions abide by the rules of the broadcasting act.

LO3 Treatment

LO3 Treatment

Documentary proposal and treatment:

What is the documentary about?

Our documentary is about how games and movies have influenced, and are influencing, the people that use them daily. We thought of this because we all have played games and we all know the kinds of content that games and movies contain. We also knew about all the stories of how people have been affected by the different impacts that movies and games have had on the thinking of young adults and children.

What is our target audience?

To find our target audience we made a questionnaire that we gave to some people to fill out. Through this questionnaire we found that the most popular age groups were 12-17 and 18-24. So we decided as a group that our target audience would be 16-23, as this lies in both categories.

Mood board:

This is our mood board. The pictures that have been collected in this are all about games, movies and technology. What we are trying to show is that there are so many forms of violence that can be found everywhere. This is why we decided to do a documentary based on the influence of games and movies on life.

LO3 Genre conventions we have used

LO3 Genre conventions we have used

The genre for our documentary is participatory. This is a documentary genre that consists of the filmmaker being in the actual documentary, being a part of the documentary. We chose this as our genre because we thought of holding interviews with different people that included our main person. A good example of a participatory documentary is that which has been created by Michael Moore. Bowling for columbine is a documentary where Michael Moore talks about how America have very loose rules on guns in the United States of America. He gives interviews to people that have involved in topics with guns, victims of the shooting the school and general people who have different views on the gun laws in America. Michael Moore, in this documentary, is always a part of what is going on. He is always there giving examples of how easy it is to obtain guns, like how at the start of the documentary he opens a bank account and then is able to get a free gun. He is also a part of all the interviews that are in the documentary. He also follows some people around and witnesses their thoughts on the topic of the documentary.

We wanted to use this genre as we good get the view of different people on our topic, which was the influences of movies and games on people. We thought that we could use our questions to try and let people talk openly about their experiences with movies and games, and whether they believe that people are heavily influenced by movies and games.

LO3 Rsearch into main task

LO3 Research into main task

This is the website at which we attained this information. This information has been found on a blog that has a many more blogs on the pros and cons of different topics. This means that the information might be biased as it is done by a person and not by an actual company.

Technology pros and cons

Technology Pros

Here is a list of the pros of technology

Technology Cons

Here is a list of the cons of technology
Technology help improve our standard of living with inventions such as the automobile, fridge, TV, computers, the Internet and so on.

Technology helps industries and individuals to automate complex process or to do dangerous tasks. For example, robots in the production line can operate all day doing mundane jobs that human workers used to do.

Technology increase efficiency and productivity. This mean higher profit because technology can do more tasks faster than human.

The invention of the computers helps us communicate, share information, invent, design, store huge amount of data, organise and manage tasks.

Transferring million of pounds can be done in a few clicks and take seconds to securely transfer money from one person to another person anywhere around the world. As well as making online purchase, checking your balance and paying your bills without leaving the comfort of your home.

Computers and technology
have brought new industries such as the software industry, hardware industry, the Internet industry, the search engine industry with Google, Yahoo!, Bing, and resulted in many high tech jobs.
The Internet is now an important part in how we communicate and share information. The Internet positively changes the advertising industry, the entertainment industry and many other industries.

Creating digitalised information allows large amount of information to be store in a small compact storage (CD, DVD, USB, hard drive, ect.). In addition, digitalising information such as data, music, images and videos can be store for a very long time. Digitalised information also contains the quality of the information if it need to be duplicated multiple times, unlike the previous types of technology like tape recorder lower the quality of information when duplicate.

Satellite communication is also an important part of technology. Without it, there would be no cellular phones, GPS, sateite radio or satellite TV to broadcast anywhere around the world.

Cellular phones revolutionised the communication industry. Regular telephone was also a technology we still use today and it too revolutionised the way we communicate. With mobile phones, we are able to call anyone in the world outside our home, offices or walking down the street.

Digitalised information reduce waste from printed materials like magazines and newspaper.

There are so many ways technology has an positive impact on our lives but it is impossible to list them all. If you think I miss something important, feel free to add it in the comment area below this page.
Computers are addictive, people spent hours and days playing video games or online casino.

Technology requires regular maintenance to keep it functioning correctly.

Need to upgrade your skills to operate new technology or have to retrain your employees.

The cost of technology and the maintenance cost is something to be considered.

Technology can break down; you may loss all of your data if you don’t have a backup.
There are hackers, virus and other cyber-terrorists that can steal sensitive information or disrupt the flow of information.

Technology replaces people in many jobs because technology is more cost effective and more efficient than humans. For example, robots in the automotive industries replace human workers.

There is no or little privacy.

Information on your computer can be look into at your workplace if your employer chose to do so.

Your information can be trace or stolen if your network is not secure.

Overview:

As it is clear from the table above, the number of pros of technology compared to the number cons is a very large margin. this could show that the good things that technology can provide outweigh the things that technology take away.

Research for movie/game related crimes/incidents:

Other research that we conducted were of searching for incidents that were related to murders or events that were primarily influenced by violent games and movies. Some of the websites that we used are:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2001/nov/18/filmnews.film

This website gave us information on copycat killers. This is when people are effected by games to an extent at which the person starts to imitate the actor in the movie or game.

This is a picture of the website that we got information on one of the copycat killings that have already occurred. This is useful information to use because it gives us an opportunity to include actuality footage and reconstructions in our documentary. This gives the documentary a reinforced base, which will make the topic being discussed more real. We could also include people talking about these things that  have occurred and have been shown in the news.

Another prime example of the influences of gaming is the murder case of James Bulger. This story would also be discussed in the documentary to show how these things can affect both adults and children. From this information we can also conclude that the events that have occurred are not just about children being able to play games or watch movies that are inappropriate for them, but it also shows us that all people can be affected by the violence in games and movies.

This is an image of the website that we got the information on the killing of James Bulger by the two teenage males. This information can also help us in making reconstructions of the events and allow us to base some of our documentary content on this certain occurrence. Other information would also be used like researching the statistical figures that tell us how many knife killings there are in certain cities or countries. We can then relate this to things like how developed the area is and if they have a larger market for violent games. We could then talk about how the effects of violent games and movies might affect the whole world.

LO3 Mood board

LO3 Mood board

This is our mood board. In this we have a collection of images that show the different aspects of our documentary, as well as the inspirations for our documentary content, which is violence of games taken into real life and the large availability of violent movies and games. The mood board will allow us to show people the basis of our documentary.

LO3 Group idea

LO3 Group idea

For our documentary idea we had to decide on which ideas we would develop form our individual ideas. We decided as a group on two ideas, which are technology, movies and games. We then decided that we could expand on these ideas by thinking of the different incidents including the two topics and by also thinking of the different things we can add to our documentary. Later on we decided that it would be better if we left out technology. This is because we thought that we could concentrate more on movies and games as they have a better link, in terms of the documentary idea, with "what influences do movies and games have on peoples lives?"

LO3 Individual mind map

LO3 Individual mind map

In this post I will be discussing the idea that i had put forward in the group.

For our documentary production we all started by thinking of our own, individual, ideas to use as the topic of the documentary.
The idea that I thought of was the influence that games have on the younger generation.

My big questions would be:
·      What are the positives and negatives of video gaming
·      Do the negatives of gaming out weigh the positives of gaming?
·      Are video games de-socialising our younger generations?

The reason that I wanted to choose this as the main topic of the documentary is because it would be easier to find content on the topic itself and it also relates to us, as gaming, in some cases, heavily influences the people of our age group.

The idea of games/movie influence is that we would concentrate on the ways that these things influence people and the way that it could make some people act.

There would also be some parts on how the people themselves think of the game/movies and possibly compare them to the opinions of the adults, which could be parents, schoolteachers or even older friends.

To decide on the topic that we would use for the documentary we showed each other our ideas and then all had a vote on which topic that we want to use.

The pros and cons of the choice that I made is that the information can be found easily because we can ask people that we know if they play games too much and what they think about playing games.

The content would also be easier to make as we could have interviews with anyone as we can ask younger people whether or not they like video games.  Teenagers would also be interviewed as they can relate to the topic as it effects there age group in a large way.
